Description:Gerald M. (Jerry) Sass has been cited by many as one of the most individually influential people in promoting quality journalism education and keeping efforts toward multicultural diversity within the newspaper industry relevant. In 1977 he joined the Gannett Foundation as the director of education programs and was responsible for awarding more than $4 million dollars in grants to organizations including the Institute for Journalism Education, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Asian American Journalists Association, and Native American Journalists Association among others. After the Gannet Foundation became the Freedom Forum, Sass became is executive vice president. Because of his efforts in journalism education the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication renamed the Distinguished Service Award, the Gerald M. Sass Distinguished Service Award in 1996. It is an award used to recognize outstanding journalistic service by organizations and individuals.
